5,6-Disubstituted-pyridine-2,3-diones were synthesized via the reaction of 3-hydroxy- 1<I>H</I>-pyridin-2-ones with anilines in the presence of NaIO<sub>3</sub> under solvent-free conditions by grinding. The structures of the products were identified by <sup>1</sup>H NMR, MS, IR techniques and elemental analysis. The method offered several advantages including mild reaction conditions, simple experimental procedure and high yields.
