CuCl/Y adsorbent was prepared by a thermal treatment of a mixture of CuCl and Y zeolite. The dispersions of CuCl on Y zeolite were studied with XRD. The results showed that CuCl dispersed uniformly on Y zeolite surface at atomic level when CuCl loading was lower than a threshold. The dispersion capabilities (thresholds) of CuCl on Y zeolite were 0.58g CuCl/g Nay, 0.68g CuCl/g NH4Y and 0.41 g CuCl/g CuY, respectively. The CuCl modified Y zeolites have high CO adsorption capacities, because CO can form coordination bonds with Cu (Ⅰ) ions dispersed on the Y zeolite surface. The CO adsorption on the adsorbents depends on CuCl loading and cations of zeolite. The adsorbent with the highest CO adsorption is 0.6 g CuCl/g NH4Y. It has a CO adsorption capacity of 123 mL/g NH4Y at 293 K with a CO pressure of 66.7 kPa. The design and synthesis of the cuCL/Y system are based on a general principle that compounds tend to spontaneously disperse on the surface of supports to form a monolayer.
