This paper describes a new method of synthesizing mixed-metal clusters via phase transfer catalysis. The reactions between Co2(CO)8 and Pt(P(C6H5)3)2Cl2 were investigated. In addition to the cluster Pt2Co2(\m\2-CO)3(CO)5(P(C8H5)3)2, reported in literatures, a new mixed metal cluster Pt3Co2(\m\2-CO)5(CO)4(P(C8H5)3)3 and a pentanuclear platinum cluster were also obtained. The optimum conditions for the reactions producing these three clusters were determined. The cluster Pt2Co2(\m\2-CO)3(CO)5(P(C8H5)3)2 was found to possess high catalytic activity for hydroformylation of 1-hexene under mild conditions.
